Bachelor pad: Whatever sort of love you seek, there's a site for you

Bachelor pad: Whatever sort of love you seek, there's a site for you By Matt Katz

Gannett News Service

It totally has gotten out of hand. There are now - are you ready for this? - dating sites for people who classify themselves as "asexual."

Asexuals are those who have a low to nonexistent sex drive for either physical, mental or emotional reasons.

According to a 2004 survey in Britain, 1 percent of 18,000 people made a check next to this statement: "I have never felt sexually attracted to anyone at all."

Assuming half of those people are the same prankster losers who voted for Donald Duck for student body prez in high school - and assuming another quarter of those people just, like, totally didn't understand the question - that still means 45 of those people are asexual.

I understand this might be a difficult life to lead, but it also seems in some ways asexuals avoid all the hassles, heartache and hell of being attracted to other people.

From the beginning, I would have benefited from asexuality. I would have done better in high school, for example, if I spent less time concentrating on what Michelle was wearing in calculus and more time learning how to find the arc length of a parametrically defined curve.

And from there, without having girls to call and girls to daydream about and girls to talk about, I could have done great things with my life.

By now, you would know me as a genius scientist who cured the world of disease. Instead, I write a column about dating.

Still, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised by sites like www.asexualpals.com. Online dating is so popular now everyone wants a piece of the action, so to speak.

There are dating sites not just for those who don't want sex but also for those who don't want kids (www.dinklink.com), don't want war (www.lovein war.com) and don't want Judeo-Christian religion (www.paganconnection.com).

Little people can find love at www.datealittle.com and big people can go to www.tallfriends.com.

Even the geeks have gotten involved, although their site, www.gk2gk.com, doesn't allow pictures to be posted, which makes it considerably less interesting.

These sites help those who feel they have no other choice but to date people like them. The best example of this is STD dating sites, where singles who have herpes, HIV, HPV or any number of other STDs can openly acknowledge their ailments and meet others with the same diseases.

Check out this testimonial from a user of www.positivesingles.com and then cry your eyes out because it's so beautiful: "I am leaving this amazing Web site with a huge smile of happiness on my face. Because of this Web site I was able to find the guy I've been waiting for all my life."

Or this: "For people who live with the burden of any STD, having a way of meeting someone anonymously who is dealing with the same problem is truly a gift. You have provided an avenue for people like me to find true happiness. I am forever grateful."

So there you go. It's the Internet age, and if you can't find love, it doesn't mean anything is wrong with you. It just means you're not good at Googling.

Hi Mary,

I'm not exactly a female virgin, but isn't the pap test used to detect cervical cancer? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but they discovered that cervical cancer was caused by an STD virus. They now have a vaccine. But since you are not sexually active, you shouldn't need to worry about STD's or the virus or cervical cancer or pap smears. I would seriously recommend that you see a different doctor. One that knows a little bit more about cervical cancer and the vaccine.

A baby can be exposed to HPV from their mother during vaginal birth, so even women with no exposure to sexual intercourse should still have Pap tests on occasion, but it might not be needed as often. I would suggest a frank discussion with your doctor. Also, a female doctor might be motivated to do a better job than a male doctor, since they understand on a personal level what it's like. If there's a gay clinic in your area, they might have someone more knowledgeable about your particular needs because some lesbians are likely to have similar physiological reactions.

The CDC has a lot of information on HPV here: http://www.cdc.gov/STD/HPV/STDFact-HPV.htm

lol Jim!!! What breed dogs do you have?

A German shepherd-black Lab mix (14 1/2 years old and receiving home hospice care--I'm not sure how much time he has left); a yellow Lab or Lab mix; and two short-haired pointy-eared black and tan mutts. Dobermutts, maybe. One has such long legs and dramatic swoop from chest to belly that I think she might have some Greyhound or whippet or other sight hound in her. She also has a rounded forehead and slightly shorter snout than the other Dobermutt (they are not biologically related), suggesting possibly some Rottweiler ancestry.

I don't allow my cats in bed with me simply because one of them feels the urge in the middle of the night to knead me. Not welcome. Sure wish I could train him though to give me a back rub.

Try lying on your stomach when he gets in a kneading mood. I've gotten a few unexpected backrubs from cats by falling asleep on my stomach.

I usually like the feel of cat-kneading, unless their claws are in need of trimming.

Re: [Haven for the Human Amoeba] Puberty

Parent Comment

When I was a kid, about puberty, all the kids in my school my age were starting to have sexual attractions toward each other. However, in my case, I stayed the same as I was before puberty and did not develop sexual desires toward anybody, yet I still developed secondary sex characteristics such as a deeper voice, chest hair and such.

I was wondering if this description applies to anyone else out there as well? Is this the time when you discovered that you were different?

Hey Jen, Have you thought of a poodle? They're suppose to be o.k. for people with allergies. Mary

I thought it was shorthaired animals, poodles have a lot of hair?

I have animal allergies too, but if it's one cat and shorthaired with a thin coat, I can tolerate it well enough. I'm not experienced enough with dogs to know what they're like to live with, but I would be willing (one day) to experiment with a small terrier and a shorthaired cat because I would like a dog to walk for our mutual exercise, and to let me know when people are nearby. I'd probably install a good air cleaner, HEPA perhaps, to keep the dander from getting out of hand, and use other dust control measures as well.

Some interesting stuff to read about dog allergies: http://allergies.about.com/od/dogs/

Apparently, carpeting and stuffed animals can increase your allergic reactions to dogs, even if you don't have pets.

Another tip on the above page says that bathing a dog once a week dramatically cuts down on dander problems.

And then there's "sneeze-free dog breeds" (book) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0793805716 (I have no idea how good it is, but it's more than a list of breeds. It also gives tips for making the home kinder for allergy sufferers.)

Re: [Haven for the Human Amoeba] Re: welcome to intro

Hello All, In addition to my need to sleep in a separate bed, I need to sleep in a separate room most of the time. There are many wonderful benefits to residing in separate rooms. This allows each person to create their own space to suite his/her needs. Each person needs down time and needs to do their down/quiet or alone time in the fashion that meets that person's needs. Some people need very little alone time and yet some people may vary day to day.

Being knowledgeable of one's needs is the first key in getting along with another person. when one knows/understands one's needs and responsibly takes care of one's self the result is much more inner peace. Then engaging with another person is much sweeter.

Meeeeee! I had to get a queen-size futon so there would still be a little bit of room for me, after the three large dogs (now up to four) and anywhere from 1-4 cats made themselves comfortable. (I don't like them snoring, though. When they snore, I shove them until they stop.) Human housemates would be able to offer some things that dogs and cat's can't, such as intelligent conversation and help with housework. But I wouldn't want to share my bed or even my bedroom with a human.

One of the things I like to do is draw what my "dream house" would be like. One of my designs had separate areas for two people connected to a central area with a double bed. People could choose to sleep together, or apart, depending on their mood and needs. The central room would not have personal belongings.

Another design had essentially two wings sharing a kitchen, laundry, dining and living rooms, with an option to use a sliding door to divide the living room into two rooms, each with their own front entrance and wing. My idea was for two to four people sharing a house in this manner.

I'm not an architect, this is just for my own fun.

You can put together your ad and see profiles of others. You must check-it-out if you are like me and want to put an end to your misery, find someone to love and live a "normal" life. (Women you can see me there). I think the website is new because there are only a couple of ads. On www.asexualove.net you can find just friends or partners.

Personally, I easily get a crush on nice personality or a nice girl face, love closeness, but when it comes to intercourse it might as well be with a pillow ;-) I'm ultimately looking for someone who can share with me a non sex-pressure love and all the things life has to offer.

Sorry if I seem to be blunt, but it might be in reaction to one of the earlier postings. You're not going to find asexual friends on chat rooms. How many people can there be if this group has only 605 members (about 3 is me because I keep forgetting my ID). And chat rooms are filled with idiots who will just make you more miserable.

I would like to see you there. Kuba680.

I like that idea too, though I'm not personally interested in a bed and breakfast. But if several people will share a house, it's nice, except the fridges I think should be in the kitchen.

I like a country-style home with a large kitchen and pantry, so it wouldn't be hard to put in several refrigerators.

Another of my designs was a rectangular plot of land with four small cottages, two at each end with separate small garages, then central common yard area inside for kids playing, gardening, or whatever. There would be a common security wall connecting and closing off the four cottages from the outside to make it look like a unit.

A series of these could be built on a long block as part of building a model city. I daydream about bulding one of those too. (-:

People could choose to sleep together, or apart, depending on their mood and needs. The central room would not have personal belongings.

For a bed & Breakfast house, you might want to emulate a modern college dorm apartment. They have common area kitchen, livingroom & dining room. The bedrooms all have private baths, mini fridges and key lockable doors.

When I had a roommate in college, we only had one fridge. The problem was that he would always steal all my food. I hated that. That's why private fridges would be more appealng to me.

Re: [Haven for the Human Amoeba] Re: welcome to intro

Dennis, when anyone violates my boundaries, I don't like it one bit. I don't put up with that crap at all. Taking food, using my towels due to laziness, rather than one washing their own or whatever selfish crap one can think of doing to another.

I think the separate fridge is a great idea. I've successfully shared a fridge with others. It just depends on the behavior of the 2 or more people. I do like your idea though. I think I would also want a good size freezer in the garage too. I like to buy in large quantities a lot of times. I don't care to shop repeatedly for things I know I want at the house anyway. It takes up my time and gas.

I love the sharing this group is finally doing. It's great!

Jen

This sounds like an asexual commune. That could be fun. I think we should get asexual vacation resorts too. :-)

Nicole

P.S. I want to reply to other messages I've gotten and the pet thread, I hope to have time later tonight.

P.P.S. Does anyone have any favorite hobbies? Knitting, fishkeeping, pets, gardening, synchronized swimming dance troupe, etc.... ?

I don't know that this would be a hobby, but my friend's wife just called me over to their house this morning to tell me that there was a 6 foot alligator in their yard. I went over and helped get him loaded up in the truck. His wife took photos and will be emailing them to me pretty soon. If the moderator approves, I'll post some of them in the photo section.

I've lived here in South Florida all my life and this is the first time I've actually touched a live gator. The gator is now on his way to the luggage factory. They used to relocate them, but there are so many of them eating joggers and such that they had to stop doing that.

Not only will I approve of such photos being put in the photo section, I insist that you put them there.

I am an avid herpetoculturist and keep snakes as pets in the house. Of course they are in their own cages all the time, but when people find out I have snakes as pets, they usually forego wanting to come by for idle visits.

I look forward to seeing the photos. Thanks

I'm not much on crafts and sports, most of my time is involved with my computer. My most fun activity is role-playing games. However, I also like to do Internet research. I was joking with a co-worker today that if only they weren't Republicans, I could work for the government since they seem to spend an inordinate amount of time peeking into things they should not and probably need a lot of people to do it all. (However, I do respect privacy too much to use my talents for "the Dark Side.")

I finally received the photos from my friend. Unfortunately, the list does not seem to be configured to allow me to add photos. It also won't let me add files because I tried adding them there.

I just changed the settings to allow photos and files for members. Please post away, I am eagerly awaiting a glance at the gator photos.
