Re: [Haven for the Human Amoeba] list description was only asexuality

The list description doesn't mention it being a support group. People can try to be sensitive but I think people are here to talk about all aspects of it.

It's interesting though, because a discussion list about men, by men, will probably focus on men, whereas a list for women will spend much time discussing men.

Hi Carolyn,

I agree, we don't want to be one-dimensional. I was upset last night because it seems that for the past week or so, about 90 percent of the posts were either about sex or about hormones. I was hoping this list would be a refuge from all that, as I hear enough of it in my daily life LOL.

You didn't do anything to offend me, no worries.

[Haven for the Human Amoeba] only asexuality

Stephanie,

I can agree with putting a Topic title for emails, however, I hope members of this group can connect more than just discussing asexuality. We are all dimensional beings so just discussing asexuality would eventually get ho-hum.

I apologize to you if any of my emails offended you. It wasn't my intention.

I'm not here to argue. I'm here to discuss topics that are actually relevant to asexuality. If people insist on talking about sex, and particularly about sexual violence, they can at least place a warning in the subject line, as is the convention at AVEN, so that those of us who would prefer not to read them know to avoid them. If that doesn't happen, don't be surprised if I say something about the direction the list is going.

It is about asexuality. But if people talk about sexuality that is not so totally unrelated. Just lighten up a bit. To be honest I can't stand sex at all, and talk about organisms really turns me off.

Again, if you don't like what someone is saying or can't relate click and delete. You don't have to read every post.

I'm sorry you feel so offended by my wanting a list about asexuality to be about asexuality. It was my mistake in signing up and expecting the list to discuss topics related to its stated purpose. Please feel free to correct me on this matter and explain the list's real purpose and I will decide whether I actually still have an interest.

That's completely beside the point that either Carolyn or I was making. This conversation has gone far astray. Why are we talking so much about sex on a list about asexuality???

The point I have tried to make is that a person can be asexual yet still be physically capable of arousal. This is the central point that seems to bother a lot of sexual people, judging both from this conversation and a similar conversation on my Facebook page.

Asexual does NOT mean "physically incapable of sex" any more than homosexual means "physically incapable of sex with an opposite gender partner".

In other words, as I said in my last post, asexual is not a different kind of sexual. So please stop bringing up issues that are absolutely irrelevant to asexuality such as sex being required for procreation or the reactions of children to being molested.

I've never actually heard of that, of rape victims having an orgasm. Sounds like a myth to me, one of those put out by men to uphold their view that women really want it.

I concur. There have been rape victims who have had orgasms during their assault....a physical reaction doesn't mean it is welcomed or wanted.

Having an involuntary physical response has nothing to do with asexuality whatsoever. If someone brushes up against me or I choose to touch myself, of course I'm going to have a physical response. But I have no interest in either myself or anyone else touching me and causing a physical response.

Interesting article. It talks about the complete lack of sexual desire or attraction, but it ignores the automatic physical response humans can have. It's how children can be seduced, and when their body involuntarily responds to touch, they may end up feeling guilty.

It is another aspect of asexuality, about one's body not feeling any sexual drive (instinct) at all.

Are there asexuals among us? On the possibility of a "fourth" sexual orientation By Jesse Bering Oct 29, 2009 04:15 PM 74

Some scientists believe that there may be a fourth sexual orientation in our species, one characterized by the absence of desire and no sexual interest in males or females, only a complete and lifelong lacuna of sexual attraction toward any human being (or non-human being). Such people are regarded as asexuals....

I suspect McEwan is using the common misconception of asexuality, in which a person thinks that refraining from having sex makes someone asexual. You don't "become" asexual any more than you become any other sexual orientation.

It could also mean sexual dysfunction. Pornography addiction can reportedly have that effect: A person becomes dependent on pornography and unable to respond sexually to a real partner. I would not call that being asexual, any more than I'd call it asexual to have any other kind of fetish or paraphilia.

Re: [Haven for the Human Amoeba] Re: Clarence Thomas

One would probably put it this way: Mr Thomas is choosing to be celibate.

In a sense, a person does 'become' asexual, simply asexuality is situated within society. One learns about it, or grows up expecting to feel sexual but don't, so it is just as much a process as becoming sexual.

One more thing, we talk about things, label them, etc, in terms of their oppositions. that's just the way the world is - Black/white, man/woman, right/wrong, sexual/asexual. If there weren't 'sexuality' then there wouldn't be asexuality. Two sides of the same coin.

Re: [Haven for the Human Amoeba] Interesting article

Lots of interesting ideas there! But it is still 'science' only, so be wary of that. they tend to be 'fixed' in their ideas sometimes.

In my last post I mentioned the idea of opposites, such as male/female, and sexuality/asexuality. Society now is leaning towards looking at these in terms of a 'continuum', or variations, such as the concept male/female, and not see them as mutually exclusionary.

I realize some people on this list want to claim 'asexuality' all for thier own, and anyone whodoesn't fit into a limited definition of that should not be included. Thus those who have previously experienced sexual desire plus sexual relations, and even if they do not feel their present state is not 'celibacy', or not a choice, are not really suitable for the category 'asexual,' according to what some people think.

Same with 'men' and 'women.' Some people are not strictly located within either category. And even if they are transsexuals who have completed their sexual transition, they may not always be welcome. Thus, I would sy, read whatever is out there, but don't take it as your bible on the subject of asexuality. It's just someone's research and writing into the subject, and cannot cover everything.

Interesting post. Here are a few thoughts:

I think we need both an umbrella term and specific terms to define different aspects of the continuum, as has happened on the gender continuum. I fit under the umbrella term "Transgender" because I am gender-neutral, but the word gender-neutral differentiates me from someone who identifies as the opposite gender from hir birth-assigned gender.

Similarly, there is a continuum of sexuality vs asexuality and we need terms to express where people fit on this continuum. Some people, for example, have no desire whatsoever while others have limited desire such as the desire to hold hands or to kiss.

It's also really not for anyone to judge whether someone else is asexual. There are many asexual people who do have sex for various reasons, and there are many people who don't explore their orientation until later. So nobody can say with any certainty that someone else isn't asexual because of that person's experiences. At the same time, words do have to mean something or there is no point to having the word. So we do have to find a point on the continuum where a person is predominantly sexual or predominantly not.

I have Aspergers syndrome. So what if having Aspergers influences sexual feelings? That doesn't mean the members of the Aspie community who identify as asexual are somehow less asexual than those who do not have Aspergers.

It irked me to no end that the diagnosing doctor felt a need to put quotes around the word asexual in her diagnostic report (She said she identifies as "asexual".) as if it wasn't really my orientation but just a symptom of my autism.

[Haven for the Human Amoeba] Asexuality as a Human Sexual Orientation was Continuum

Here's another article worth reading:

Asexuality as a Human Sexual Orientation Jessica Engelman http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/node/1870

Only in the past few years has the public in general accepted homosexuality and bisexuality as genuine sexual orientations (although debates over cause, morality, and status in society continue), but now another orientation is being proposed: asexuality. What is it, and is it really a sexual orientation, determined before birth like heterosexuality or homosexuality are now theorized to be? Traditionally, "asexual" referred to the reproduction of simplistic organisms (amoebas, primitive worms, fungi, etc.) or in humans to a lack of sexual organs or an inability to feel/act sexually due to disability or other condition. However, the new proposed definition for "asexual" presents it as a (human) sexual orientation, following that if heterosexuality is attraction to the opposite sex, homosexuality is attraction to the same sex, bisexuality is attraction to both, asexuality is attraction to neither sex. An exact definition has not been officially set, so most "experts" in the area reference AVEN (Asexuality Visibility and Education Network): "a person who does not experience sexual attraction." This is not to be confused with chastity, which is a choice to not act upon sexual urges (for asexuality to be an orientation it must be innate, not a choice). Even this definition is slightly incomplete; AVEN implicitly indicates asexuality only refers to lack of sexual attraction to another person. (1) The reason I cite a non-academic website (AVEN is actually an online community for asexuals devoted to providing opportunities for these previously isolated individuals to interact and promote awareness about asexuality) and put "experts" in quotes is that the subject of human asexuality has received almost no academic attention, nor in literature, nor by society, and only in the past few months has it become a hot topic in the media. In just the end of March/beginning of April 2006 segments on asexuality were featured on CNN, 20/20, MSNBC, and even Fox News. This recent interest has sparked some notice from researchers, but asexuality isn't as clear-cut as the other three "recognized" orientations. (continued at http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/node/1870 )

hi all

So I was wondering does anyone have any fun hobbies?

I like belly dancing. I also like dancing around any old way.

Obviously I like middle eastern music. I also have a thing for early 80's funk. But really... I like almost anything. I love Randy Travis.

I like physics and sit around reading physics textbooks and doing physics problems.

I try to do computer programming but I haven't done that much lately.

Someday, I want time to do more astronomy and look at the stars.

I find I need jobs where I get to think. And eventually I need time to move around. I can't just sit forever.

Also... I love my two cats! They rock.

Oh, and sometimes I have pet fish. It is especially fun to put together nice ecosystems of plants and wood and sunshine for them. I also like to have one snail. But no more than one. Otherwise there are a million snails. I like to have cute little frogs too.

When I look for friends, I like people who are good at communicating with words. I also like people who are loyal and nice to themselves and others. Honesty is important. I mean, everyone needs privacy and lies sometimes. I'm talking about having folks who will be courageous and discuss the big issues.

So what other hobbies to people have? There are lots of things that define who I am! How about you?

Hi Nicole!

Nice to meet you!

I am fascinated by Middle Eastern music. My best friend and I spend hours listening to it. It's part of our eclectic Jewish practise. I like all sorts of other music too. Right now I'm listening to Jewel's new album. When my roommate comes home I'll probably switch to John Lennon (the album is in the car LOL)

Other hobbies... too many to list. Right now I'm in the midst of editing all 15 of my Squidoo pages before (hopefully) writing a new one, about what I don't know yet. LOL

I'm a writer. I write young adult fiction (new book is coming out in a few weeks, yeah!) and non-fiction articles on a wide variety of topics. I'm also fascinated by astronomy as well as time travel. I watch Dr Who and Torchwood on a regular basis with my meetup group.

Stephanie

Hey Nichole, glad to seeya here and starting a well over due topic - introductions.

Physics - WOW you is super smart!

Me, well my hobbies are books - love books - hopefully I will read all the books that are on my shelves.  I also am a big fan of audio books.  I am a seasoned genealogist.  I always have my rod cast for new info.  I got my surname back to the 1680's.

I like movies.  I am quite patient in that area and can wait for them to get to the dollar show or the red box.  My favorite movie is a hard one to nail.  I have a handful that I consider top notch, but the 2 that are dear to my heart are 84 Charing Cross Road and Its a Wonderful Life.

Music.  I am a top 40, ambient chic.  I like pop, Christian, classical, blues, jazz pretty much everything, but country, slash metal and rap.

I am into photography too.  I hope to become a good one - one day.  I have been exploring my 'art' side over the past few years.  I pretty much labeled myself uncreative and past all those doors on the way down here to earth, but now I am open to explore to what is my niche in this area.

I would like to get back into yoga.  I do like it in spite of my weeble shaped body.  I do miss it, however it brings me sadness as well.  Long story.

TV - well I am a LOSTie and still upset they ended it.  Currently my fave shows are:  Supernatural, LA Ink, Drop Dead Diva and I am giving The Event a chance.  I am also a Trekkie - prefer NG and the spin offs over the original.

I like astronomy too.  Cannot say I know much, but I like it.  I hope to capture some beautiful shots of celetial bodies.  I keep chasing after that moon with my simple digital.

I love animals as well.  Cats rock.  I lost my cat of 15 years this past February.  I am still grieving.  To be honest I don't think I have ever grieved so deeply as I have over my loss of my furry kid.

I hope to create my own webpage one day.  I also love to travel.  I wish I had the time and the bank to do more of it.  I want to leave my fingerprints all over this globe.

I would never bungee jump or sky dive probably the most extreme thing I would do is a ride on the vomit comet - I would love to float.

Take care - Carolyn

I am happy to see general chat and introductions so we can get to know each other. I am probably the oldest in the group as I will turn 65 this month.   I too have lots and lots of books. Most of them are biographys, spiritual new age type books and books by a mystery writer from the 30s-50s named Baynard Kendrick who was a mentor of mine. I also love books on the history of the Mississippi River.   My companions are 2 dogs and 2 cats. Kendrick is my huge Shiloh Shepherd at almost 140 pounds and Shyla a Pit Bull rescue who is my lap dog. The cats are Grover and Sally. I am a retired special ed teacher who almost 30 years ago did a single parent adoption and raised a wonderful daughter. Recently I moved cross country to live near her.   My music tastes vary but tend to be older as I guess I am older. I love love love Andrea Bocelli and Tom Jones and have seen both of them in concert many times. Mary

[Haven for the Human Amoeba] hi all

Carolyn, it's one of my dreams to travel as well. I haven't been out of the US yet... I hope that will change soon. I'd love to take a cruise to Europe and see various cities.

I have a couple of horses and love spending time with them.  Since they're geldings, they're asexual too!
